Rules & Regulations

UK Schools Music Festival · 2026–2027

1. About the Festival

The UK Schools Music Festival (UKSMF) is an inclusive educational music event that gives school-aged musicians opportunities to perform, build confidence, develop teamwork and receive constructive professional feedback.

The Festival aims to:

  • encourage musical development and thoughtful preparation;

  • provide opportunities for pupils from different school types, backgrounds and ability levels;

  • recognise achievement through adjudication, feedback, certificates and approved awards;

  • support parents, guardians and teachers with clear information; and

  • provide a safe, respectful and well-organised experience.

Although we use the term “competition,” our emphasis is not on rivalry but on creating a supportive platform for students to challenge themselves, pursue personal growth and learn from their peers. Marks are awarded according to the quality and standard of each individual performance. If a performance reaches the required level, the entrant receives the corresponding award; performances are not compared against one another. Our goal is to foster musical development and inspire a lifelong love of music in all participants.

Eligibility

2. Eligibility

2.1 Entry Responsibility
  • Entrants must be of school age during the 2026–2027 academic year.
  • A Solo entry may be submitted directly by a parent or guardian. A school or music organisation is not required.

  • A Team entry must be submitted by an authorised teacher or staff member representing the entering school or approved educational organisation.

  • UKSMF communicates with the registered adult contact, not directly with a child.

  • The registered adult is responsible for the accuracy of the entry and for obtaining all required permissions.

  •  UKSMF may request reasonable evidence of a pupil’s age, school year or school enrolment.

2.2 Age Divisions
Solo
  • Primary — Years 1–6.

  • Secondary — Years 7–13.

Team
  • Primary — Years 1–6.

  • Junior Secondary — Years 7–9.

  • Senior Secondary — Years 10–13.

For a mixed-age Team, use the division of the oldest pupil performer. An adult conductor or accompanist does not affect the Team’s age division.

Competition Modes

3. Competition Modes

3.1 Live Competition

Solo entries only, for Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello and  Double Bass. Performances take place in person. Solo entries for all other instruments are Video-only.

3.2 Video Competition

All Team entries take part through the Video Competition route.

3.3 Live Competition Venue

  • The Live Solo Competition is confirmed at the Royal Academy of Music, London, on Apr 10, 2027 and Apr 11, 2027.

  • Performances will take place in Angela Burgess Recital Hall and David Josefowitz Recital Hall.

  • The Live Competition is for Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass Solo entries only.

  • Each accepted entrant will receive their assigned date, room, session time, arrival time and access information.

Categories and Groups

4. Categories and Groups

4.1 Solo Categories

Solo categories are organised by age division, instrument and performance level. Both Primary and Secondary divisions offer all four performance levels.

4.1.1 Solo Performance Levels and Time Limits
Performance Level
Grade / Equivalent Standard
Maximum Performance Time
Junior
Grades 1–3 or equivalent
3 minutes
Intermediate
Grades 4–6 or equivalent
5 minutes
Senior
Grades 7–8 or equivalent
8 minutes
Advanced
Diploma standard or equivalent
15 minutes

An entrant may submit more than one Solo entry. Each Solo entry must contain one chosen work only, performed within the time limit for the selected performance level. The chosen work must match the grade or equivalent standard of that level. An entrant may therefore enter different performance levels with different works, but each entry requires a separate application and fee.

4.1.2 Solo Instruments and Entry Codes

4.2.1 Ensemble Flexibility

  • An adult conductor and an adult accompanist are permitted and do not count towards the Team size or age division.

  • A Team may include up to one alumnus or tutor for every 10 student performers. This support performer may take part in the performance.

  • An essential support adult may take part only with prior approval where required for access, safety or musical participation.

  • UKSMF may request a membership list or confirmation from the entering organisation.

Performance Requirement

5. Performance Requirements

5.1 Repertoire and Performance Time

  • A Solo entrant must perform one work only. The chosen work must match the grade or equivalent standard of the selected performance level and must remain within that level’s time limit.

  • Advanced Level entrants may perform one or more movements from the same work, within the maximum performance time of 15 minutes. Movements from different works may not be combined in one entry.

  • Every Team must perform two contrasting works within a total maximum of 10 minutes.

  • Choir / Vocal Group entries may choose their own two contrasting works. There is no prescribed voicing requirement.

  • The Team time limit includes the pause between the two works.

  • Timing begins with the first performed sound and ends with the final performed sound.

  • UKSMF may stop a Live performance or cease reviewing a Video performance that substantially exceeds the applicable time limit.

  • Repertoire must be suitable for the performers, educational setting and audience.

  • Entrants are responsible for the lawful use of music, arrangements, backing tracks, scores and recordings.

5.2 Accompaniment

  • For Video Solo, a lawful recorded accompaniment may be used if declared and if it does not contain or replace the entrant’s Solo part.

  • Recorded accompaniment is not permitted for a Live Solo entry.

  • Where accompaniment is required for a Live Solo entry, the applicant must arrange and bring their own accompanist at their own cost.

5.3 Video Submission Requirements

  • Each submitted recording must show one continuous, unedited take of the complete performance.

  • Do not trim, splice, combine, overdub, replace or alter any part of the submitted video or audio. Edited compilations are not accepted.

  • The recording must be made for this UKSMF entry and must not be reused from another performance, concert or competition.

  • The camera must show the performer from the front, with the face, hands and instrument clearly visible throughout. For Teams, all registered performers must be identifiable.

  • The audio must be clear enough for fair adjudication. An external microphone is permitted if the sound comes from the same recorded take.

  • The recording must be made in a safe and suitable location.

  • The video title or opening slate should show the entry number, category and repertoire without unnecessary personal information.

  • School uniform is permitted but not required.

  • The responsible adult must submit a view-only video link through the official form. Accepted platforms include YouTube, Google Drive, Vimeo and other online video platforms.

  • Set the link to Unlisted, or the equivalent view-only setting. It must not be Private.

  • The link must open and play directly without sign-in, an access request or downloading the file.

  • Ensure the video is sized or compressed so that it streams reliably, and test the link while signed out or in a private browser before submission.

  • The link must remain accessible to designated UKSMF personnel and adjudicators until 30 April. Please verify that the link plays directly without requesting login credentials, access permissions, or file downloads, until results are released on the date stated in Section 8.1.

  • A legible score must be provided for every Video Solo and Team entry. If a score is missing, the adjudicator will still assess the performance on what can be heard, without being able to check the performance against a written score.

5.4 Live Competition Requirements

  • The registered adult must check the final date, venue, arrival time, access instructions and category session.

  • Entrants must arrive by the stated check-in time.

  • Late arrival may result in a shortened warm-up, rescheduling where possible or loss of the performance opportunity.

  • Access, medical, safeguarding and reasonable-adjustment requirements should be notified as early as possible.

  • Children remain under the care of their parent, guardian, school or authorised organisation unless a supervised activity has been expressly agreed.

  • Only authorised people may enter performer, backstage or restricted areas.

  • Venue and staff instructions must be followed.

  • Photography, video recording and livestreaming are not permitted at the Live Competition.

  • UKSMF provides an acoustic piano and music stands at the venue.

  • Entrants must bring their instrument (unless performing on piano), their performance score and one additional copy for adjudication, plus a valid form of identification for verification. A score is required, but if it is missing the adjudicator will assess the performance on what is heard, without score-based checking.

  • Large, specialist or venue-dependent equipment must be agreed in advance.

  • A warm-up or acoustic check is not guaranteed unless it appears in the final timetable.

  • UKSMF may change the running order for operational, access or safeguarding reasons.

  • A restart is allowed only at the adjudicator’s or event manager’s discretion, normally following an interruption outside the performer’s control.

Judging Criteria

6. Judging Criteria

6.1 Assessment Criteria

Our competition is focused on fostering growth and personal achievement. The judging criteria provide comprehensive feedback to help Soloists and Teams understand their strengths and areas for improvement.

Each performance is assessed against the published standard for its selected category and level. Entrants are not ranked or compared against one another.

  • Overall Musical Performance — quality of sound, accuracy of notes and rhythms, and execution of the chosen repertoire.

  • Artistic Level — depth of interpretation and expression, creative presentation, and the overall impact of the performance.

  • Musical Elements — timbre, tempo, dynamics, articulation, phrasing and harmony, where relevant to the repertoire.

  • Technical Proficiency — control of the instrument or voice, clarity, intonation, and the technical demands of the chosen repertoire in relation to the Soloist’s selected level or the Team’s ability and category.

  • Ensemble Cohesion (Team entries only) — teamwork, balance, blend, coordination, listening, communication and collective musical purpose.

The scoring system is intended to be fair, transparent and educational. It encourages each Soloist and Team to pursue personal excellence and continued musical growth.

Recording equipment, production value, school reputation and ability to pay must not influence the musical result.

Each accepted performance will receive constructive feedback appropriate to the entrant’s age and level.

An adjudicator’s artistic judgement is final. A registered adult may request a review only for an apparent administrative error, calculation error, eligibility decision or failure to follow the published process.

Through this structure, we recognise the dedication, diligence and passion of every participant. Each individual performance represents an important milestone in a student’s musical development, and our role is to foster that progress at every stage. Rather than pitting competitors against one another, our evaluation considers the overall performance—focusing on musical expression, stylistic understanding and artistic advancement. Entrants are encouraged to develop their skills by observing peers, reflecting on adjudicator commentary and drawing upon these insights to guide their future musical endeavours.
