The UK Schools Music Festival is a new competition dedicated to promoting music education and inspiring young musicians across the UK. Though recently established, our goal is to provide a unique platform for students to showcase their musical abilities and gain invaluable performance experience.

Our mission is to spark a lifelong passion for music in young students, encouraging them to pursue their musical dreams. Recognizing the importance of music education in the development of young musicians, we are committed to nurturing and enriching the UK's musical heritage.

We invite schools and music hubs from across the UK to join our inclusive community, where students, teachers, and music lovers can connect and collaborate. Our festival offers students the chance to celebrate their achievements and showcase their talents.

With both virtual and in-person competition options, we invite schools and organizations to partner with us in supporting music education and celebrating young musicians’ talents nationwide. Together, we can make a meaningful impact on the UK's musical landscape and inspire the next generation of musicians. Eligibility

The UK Schools Music Festival warmly invites full-time pupils from educational establishments across the United Kingdom to participate. This includes students from state-funded schools, independent schools, academies, free schools, faith schools, special schools, and those who are home-educated. We also encourage music hubs to introduce students to the festival, supporting their journey into music and performance. Our aim is to celebrate the diversity and talent across the UK student population, fostering an inclusive and creative community in the world of music.

Competition Modes

Our competition offers two modes of participation: video submission and live performance. We believe these options provide valuable opportunities for students to showcase their talents and gain rich learning experiences.

This year, we will continue our video submission mode while introducing a live competition mode exclusively for piano solo entries. Hosted in a professional recital hall, this live experience offers pianists the opportunity to perform on a real stage and receive in-person feedback. Depending on participation rates and associated costs, we plan to explore the possibility of expanding live competitions to include other instrumental and ensemble groups in the future.

Although we use the term "competition," our emphasis is not on rivalry but on creating a supportive platform for students to challenge themselves, pursue personal growth, and learn from their peers. Our goal is to foster musical development and inspire a lifelong love of music in all participants.

Question 4

Categories and Groups

Accepted Answer

We offer two main categories for entrants: Solo and Team.

Solo Entries

For Solo Entries, the competition is divided into two school year groups:
Primary: Years 1-6
Secondary: Years 7-13
Each school group is further divided into four performance levels:
Junior Level (Trinity/ABRSM Grades 1-3)
Intermediate Level (Trinity/ABRSM Grades 4-6)
Senior Level (Trinity/ABRSM Grades 7-8)
Advanced Level (Diploma level)

You can enter with any standard orchestral or popular music instrument, including:

Team Entries

Each ensemble category is divided into three groups with designated performance durations:
Junior Group: 1-2 minutes*
Intermediate Group: 2-4 minutes*
Senior Group: 4-10 minutes*

*Please be aware that the categorization of choirs or vocal groups is based on the number of voices, not the duration of performance. Note that the maximum time allowed for a choir or vocal group performance is 5 minutes.

Ensemble Flexibility
For ensembles with limited participants, we allow the inclusion of one alumnus or tutor for every 10 student performers, ensuring that larger groups have the support needed to participate in our festival.

Question 5

Performance Requirements

In this competition, We focus on students’ understanding of their chosen music, their artistry, and the way they interpret and express it in performance.
 
For Solo Entries, participants are invited to choose one piece to perform that corresponds to their chosen level (Junior, Intermediate, Senior, Advanced) based on Trinity/ABRSM grades. This allows participants to showcase their abilities through a piece that they connect with and enjoy.

For Team Entries, we allow teams the flexibility to choose their performance pieces based on their students' abilities. This encourages students to showcase their skills in a manner that best suits their capabilities and interests.groups can pick one piece as their "own choice" to perform within the time limit designated for their level (Junior - 1-2 mins, Intermediate - 2-4 mins, Senior - 4 -10 mins ). We encourage teams to select a piece that not only showcases their abilities and harmony as a group but also challenges them to push their limits.

By offering a choice of performance pieces, we aim to foster a sense of ownership and personal involvement in each participant's musical journey.

Question 6

Judging Criteria

Our competition is focused on fostering growth and personal achievement in our participants. As such, our judging criteria are designed to provide comprehensive feedback that helps teams understand their strengths and areas for improvement.
Our judges evaluate performances based on several key musical elements:

1.    Overall Musical Performance: This includes the quality of sound, the accuracy of notes and rhythms, and the execution of the chosen piece.

2.    Artistic Level: This measures the depth of interpretation and expression. It also includes the creative presentation and the overall impact of the performance.

3.    Musical Elements: This includes an assessment of aspects such as timbre, tempo, dynamics, articulation, phrasing, and harmony. Each of these elements contributes to the overall musicality and character of the performance.

4.    Technical Proficiency: This includes technical control of the instrument(s) or voice(s), clarity, intonation, and the complexity of the chosen piece in relation to the team's ability.

5.    Ensemble Cohesion: For group categories, the synergy between the team members, the balance of sounds, and the communication within the group will also be evaluated.

Our scoring system is designed to be fair, transparent, and educational, reflecting the multifaceted nature of musical performance. It encourages participants / teams to strive for personal excellence and growth in their musical journey.

Question 7

Scoring System , Entry Fee and Recogntion

Scoring System 
Our scoring system recognizes achievement at all levels:

Gold Award: 90 and above
Silver Award: 80-89
Bronze Award: 70-79
Merit Recognition: 60-69
Participation Recognition: below 60

Through this system, we honor the commitment, hard work, and passion of all participants. Each performance is a unique step in the journey of musical growth and exploration, and we are here to support that journey in all its stages. Even within the same group, our approach is not to compare participants but to evaluate each performance as a whole—considering musical interpretation, understanding of the piece, and personal growth. We encourage contestants to learn by listening to others' performances, reading feedback from the adjudicators, and using these insights to further their musical journey in the future.

Entry Fee and Recognition

Every participant will receive valuable feedback from our esteemed panel of adjudicators. This constructive commentary will serve as a tool to improve their performance, not only for the competition but for their future musical endeavors.

Venue: The Angela Burgess Recital Hall @ Royal Academy of Music

Result Announcement: 30th April 2026
Prize and Certificate Distribution: To be completed by mid-June 2026
